КОЗЬМОДЕМЬЯНСК

По преданию, Иван Грозный, возвращаясь осенью 1552 г. в Москву после покорения Казани, остановился в пути на ночлег. Это было в лень святых Козьмы и Демьяна. Уарь побродил по окрестностям и нашёл небольшую гору, подступающую почти к долине Волги и очень удобную для постройки острога. Так будто бы возник город Козьмодемьянск.

На самом деле причиной строительства острога в 1583 г. на месте небольшого русского пограничного поселения с чувашским названием Чикметола послужило восстание луговых марийцев. Как город Козьмодемьянск впервые упоминается в 1609 г.
