СТАВРОПОЛЬ

Ставрополь расположен в центре Предкавказья. Он берёт своё начало от крепости, заложенной в 1777 г.; городом стал в 1785 г. и быстро развивался. Через Ставрополь проходил почтовый тракт, связывающий Восточный Кавказ с европейскими районами страны, но с открытием железной дороги (1875 г.) этот путь на некоторое время утратил своё значение. В коние XX в. в Ставрополе более 300 тыс. жителей, около 100 предприятий (машиностроение, металлообработка, химическая, лёгкая, мебельная промышленность), 4 вуза, 2 театра, 4 музея. Своеобразны планировка и топография города. Его кварталы расположены на склонах возвышенности с перепадом высот примерно 200 м.
